High Wire ¤ Last Train to Kitty Hawk ¤ Crazy Love ¤ Never Say Never ¤ Left Behind ¤ Back in Style ¤ Driftin' ¤ She Knows How it Feels ¤ Now I Know ¤ Kaemari ¤ Romeo & Juliet ¤ Everything I Do Gon' Be Funky

high wire (bumgarner/bobal/mabe)

paul, byron, bob, brent
bryan sutton-electric guitar
brent-octave mandolin
john cowan-harmony
jon randall-harmony

well my hands are shaking, and my knees are weak
this old world keeps on turning, fast beneath my feet
so I'd best keep my balance, or I'll be hangin' by this thread
can't afford no distractions, from what lies up ahead

(chorus)
I walk a high wire, I keep steady and don't look down
I walk a high wire

so you ask how I do it, first I take a deep breath
I put it all on the line, when I take that first step
from there you've got to keep going, there's no turning back
there's no net below you, try not to think about that

(bridge)
I know the wind is gonna change, but that's gonna bother me
I'll keep my head held straight, and my eyes out in front of me [top]

last train to kitty hawk (ellis/duke)

paul, bryan, byron, bob,
jerry douglas-dobro
scott vestal-banjo
jon randall-harmony
andrea zonn-harmony

everybody knew it was bound to happen one day, another breakthrough with the twinkle of an eye
scholars scratched their heads always looking for a new way, pondered their options- then looked up to the sky

no- no nothin' lasts forever, nothing says goodbye like a ticket in your hand
whoa- they say progress makes us better, time ain't standin' still for any man

chorus
all aboard- last train to Kitty Hawk, yesterday has taken off
tomorrow's gonna fly

I guess someday they'll close down this station, we'll ride around in motor cars and never take the train
always be new ways to reach our destination, once we're done with taxi cabs we'll fly in jet airplanes

no- no nothin' lasts forever, nothin' says goodbye like a ticket in your hand
whoa- they say progress makes us better, time ain't standin' still for any man

chorus

(bridge)
time to spread our wings and fly, now the brothers sat the wind is right
don't get left behind [top]

crazy love (morrison)

paul, richard, byron, bob, brent
steve conn-wurlitzer
jon randall-harmony
kim richey-harmony

I can hear her heart beat for a thousand miles, And the heavens open every time she smiles
And when I come to her that's where I belong, Yet I'm running to her like a river's song

(Chorus):
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love, She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love

She's got a fine sense of humor when I'm feeling low down, And when I come to her when the sun goes down
Take away my trouble, take away my grief, Take away my heartache, in the night like a thief

(Chorus):

Yes I need her in the daytime, Yes I need her in the night
Yes I want to throw my arms around her, Kiss her hug her kiss her hug her tight

And when I'm returning from so far away, She gives me some sweet lovin' brighten up my day
Yes it makes me righteous, yes it makes me feel whole, Yes it makes me mellow down in to my soul

with so many great lyrics, this one, to me, is the most sensuous of van morrison songs [top]

never say never again (bobal)

paul, byron, bob
bryan sutton-electric guitar
steve conn-accordian
brent-mandolin
jon randall-harmony

there were other women that came before, you know all that and so much more
but that don't matter you stand with me, you give yourself for all to see

never say never again

it wasn't easy to let you in, it wasn't easy to be my friend
but the wall I hid behind began to fall, you stood beside me through it all

never say never again

(bridge) you know the places my life has been, you're my desire to start again

never say never again

I never thought that I could feel, this gentle strength in Love so real
yet here I am a child again, you smile at me I take your hand

never say never again [top]

left behind (sokoloski/bobal)

paul, bryan, byron, bob
brent truitt‚ gut string
john catchings-cellos
jon randall-harmony

so many things I want to say but these tears get in the way, and while I'm choking on the words Time passes by
I think of all we could have done all the laughter, all the fun, and how I never had the chance to say goodbye

all I see, and all I do I can't help but think of you, and watch you flicker like a candle in my mind
you meant the world and more to me, the gift of life that set me free
and how I wish I could just make the days rewind, to say I love you and thank you from the son you left behind

I wont forget your crooked smile & I'll miss your special style, and how you helped me find the strength to face my fears
somehow I know I'll see you again, I don't know how, and don't know when
but in the meantime, I'll remember you, and know you're with me through the years

all I see, and all I do I can't help but think of you, and how this life can sometimes be so unkind
it means the world to know you're free, I know you're watching over me
but now I wish I could just make the years rewind to say, I love you and thank you from the son you left behind

I love you ... and I miss you ...

scott & i were both dealing with losing our fathers when he came to me with the lyrics to this song...in just a couple of hours and lots of emotion i was able to find this melody and chord progression john catchings wrote the multiple cello parts on the fly in the studio!! [top]

back in style (mark w. winchester)

paul, byron, bob
brent-12 string electric & 6 string bass, mandolin
richard mclaurin-acoustic guitar
jon randall-harmony

I used to be a has been, the fashion of the past
I was wearing kinda thin, but I guess I was built to last
cause she left this years model, and called me up at once
to tell me she was through, with all these young punks

I'm back in style, she thinks I'm cool again
I'm back in style, showin' me off to all her friends
I just have to smile, now that I'm the latest trend
well it maybe only for awhile, but whoa I'm back in style

I had been put out to pasture, had outlived my usefulness
she was movin faster, she told me goodbye with a kiss
I never thought I'd see the day, that she would return
it seem there's always new trick for an, old dog to learn

(chorus)
I'm back in style, I just have to smile
well it maybe only for awhile, but whoa I'm back in style

my friend mark w. wrote this one! in addition to being the BEST rockabilly bass man around, the guy writes great songs... often with that mischievous twinkle in the eye! [top]

driftin' (quincy yeates/paul bobal)

paul, byron, bob
sam bush-mandolin
jerry douglas-weissenborn
bryan sutton-electric guitar
steve conn-organ
jon randall-harmony
paul-harmony

driftin' in my confusion, I'm losing all direction
wasting away helplessly, will somebody help me oh

2 o clock in the morning, going insane, I feel like I'm losing my brain
so many things unsaid... so little time, any day now I just might lose my mind, oh

(chorus)

desperate situation this feeling inside, tearing me down hurting my pride
it's got a hold of me it won't let go, if there's a way out of this please let me know oh

(chorus)

don't know how much more of this I can take, losing my grip starting to break
got to get out got to be free, just get away please let me be oh

quincy had this GREAT idea for a soca tune, and a verse and a half of lyrics...
we spent some time with that verse and, came up with one more to finish the song

for this CD, i slowed the tempo down to a reggae groove and kept it fairly acoustic [top]

she know how it feels (bumgarner/mabe/bobal)

paul, byron, bob
bryan sutton-electric guitar
steve conn-organ
jon randall-harmony
kim richey-harmony

every now and then she'll see a movie, maybe go have a drink with some friends
and then there's the occasional party, but she's home long before it ever ends
there are those who have tried to persuade her, but she can't bring herself to give in
cause she can't be sure that she can endure, all the pain if it happens again.

(chorus)

she knows how it feelsäshe knows how it feels, she know how it feels to have a broken heart

she's worked hard to put the past behind her, put those memories out of her mind
but it provides her with no consolation, nor the comfort that she hopes to find
still she wants to believe there is someone, who can save her from this circumstance
but deep down inside hers a constant reminder, that won't let her take half a chanceä

(chorus)

(bridge)

she knows how it feels, to think you've found your one and only
she knows how it feels, when all you left inside is lonely
(she knows how it feels) her heart and soul she gave
but he took more than she could take, now the only thing he left, she just can't forgetä.

(chorus) [top]

Now I Know (bobal)

paul, bryan, byron, bob
sam bush-fiddle
tim carter-banjo
bryan sutton-electric guitar
brent-mandolin, baritone electric
paul-harmony

I could see a look so alien, as he glanced around the room
there was something yet unspoken, I could feel the sense of doom
you were smiling as an innocent, but the false faÁade was badly rent
he could not maintain the semblance, of the way it used to be

(chorus):

now I know, there's no doubt about this feeling
now I know, my reality is reeling
I have never been this certain, I have never been so sure
even though I'll never let this hurting show, now I know

she was always in my vision, yet I didn't seem to see
she was willing to be patient, I was trying to be free
then the confidence she built inside, and the true desire I could not hide
made it possible for me, to let the heartache go

now I know and I know I'll never let these feeling go

(bridge):

now I know there's a beginning, and I know it all will end
but it's how you choose your path along the way, it's a journey that defines you
and it constantly reminds you, and it's we strive for every single day

this is what happens when your guitar influences are jimi hendrix and doc watson [top]

kaemari (bobal)

bryan, byron, bob
paul-lead acoustic, udu, didge
tramp-fiddle
brent-bozouki, mandolin

Instrumental

i wrote the 2 main melodies for this song as a "fiddle tune" they were in my head one morning after we returned from our first trip to ireland... i had to ask everyone i could think of to make sure it wasn't a song i had heard on the trip! i added the funk or "C" section later when i was putting the CD together and it became quite a bit less traditional despite it's form... i envisioned tramp, the fiddle/mandolinist for bone pony, playing the fiddle part from the very beginning. [top]

romeo & juliet (mark knopfler)

paul, bryan, byron, bob
jerry douglas-dobro
brent-electric guitar

a lovestruck Romeo sings a street serenade, laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
he finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade, says something like you and me babe how about it?

Juliet says hey it's Romeo you nearly gimme me a heart attack, he's underneath the window she's singing hey la my boyfriend's back
you shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that, anyway what you gonna do about it?

Juliet the dice were loaded from the start, and I bet and you exploded in my heart
I forget I forget the movie song, when you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?

we came up on different streets they booth were streets of shame, both dirty both mean yes and the dream was just the same
and I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real, how can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold, you can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
you promised me everything you promised me thick and thin, now you just say oh Romeo yeah you know I used to have a scene with him

Juliet when we made love you used to cry, you said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
there's a place for us you know the movie song, when you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?

I can't do the talk like they talk on tv, and I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you, I can't do anything except be in love with you

and all I do is miss you and the way we used to be, all I do is keep the beat and bad company
all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme, Julie I'd do the stars with you any time

Juliet when we made love you used to cry, you said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
there's a place for us you know the movie song, when you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?

a lovestruck Romeo sings a streetsuss serenade, laying everybody low with a love song that he made
he finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade, says something like you and me babe how about it?

this has ALWAYS been one of my favourite songs...just as west side story is still one of my favourite movies! [top]
